Blasting

Blast damage behind the face can cause new or existing fractures in the rock to dilate and loosen from explosive gases that could result in surficial or deep seated slope instabilities. This damage will increase rock fall hazards and associated costs of stabilization measures or increase concrete volumes poured against the broken rock surface. Excessive blast vibrations could also cause damage to neighbouring structures. With respect to underwater detonations, bubble curtains have been effective in reducing the potential for fish mortalities or vibrations on concrete structures by attenuating water overpressure waves that arise from the blast.
