Foundations

The structural geology and rock strengths are the main components that influences the stability and settlement of rock foundations. Joint sets (fractures) in the rock may intersect and form blocks that could displace when the foundation load is applied. The degree of fracturing and weathering will also play a vital role in foundation performance over time. Foundation designs may comprise rock socketed piers to transfer the foundation load to competent rock at depth or tension anchors to limit displacements or dilation of open joints in the rock mass when the load is applied. The selection of reinforcement may require detailed geological mapping and/or subsurface investigation, groundwater studies, and testing of both intact strength and joint shear strengths.
