Rock Slopes / Rock Falls

The excavation of rock cuts must be safe from rock falls and large scale slope instability during construction for safety of contractor personnel and service life of facilities. Some factors that control stability are structural geology, rock strength, blasting, groundwater conditions, weathering such as freeze/thaw cycles and earthquakes. Stabilization measures for rock cuts may involve the installation of tensioned bolts, dowels, mesh, concrete buttress and/or shotcrete. If it is not practical to install support than rock fall engineering would be required to model rock fall impacts and trajectories to design protection measures such as catchment ditches, fences, reinforced berms and sheds.
